Whilwind Tour…

April 4th, 2008 by Cliff

In the pre-planning of this trip I figured that once the California Ironman 70.3 was completed, I’d take a days rest and then full bore to Canada.  Since Monday, I have traveled at least 2100kms on my journey North from Newport Beach to Vancouver British Columbia.  I can honestly say, that I’m glad it’s over!  It’s going to be a few days before I want to drive even though I will have to.

There have been some good stops along the way such as visiting the Oregon National Caves, Microsoft Visitors Center, and the Boeing Plant.  The best was seeing a familiar face, as I got to see my Mom for the first time in 3 months.  There has also been some not so good times such as driving around aimlessly, sleeping in my car to save money and realizing how much cheaper EVERYTHING is in the US.  Yes, it has been one heck of a week.
Oregon Caves

Cool rocks formed over millions of years.

Thats not hair... Those are spiders.

After LA, the amount of cars decreased as did the temperature.  I was use to sleeping in a nice cushy bed waking up to temperatures in the teens.  Although the weather hasn’t been terrible (except here in BC!) it definitely isn’t the beach sun I had grown accustom too.

Portland

Mt. Saint Helens.

If you haven’t been watching the videos my car doubles as a bed.  I wanted to save some money as sleeping expenses rack up.  At the end of each day I’d pile all my bags into the front seats and roll out the sleeping bags.  The first night was the worst just because I was still stiff from the race and it got cold during the night (-5).  It’s not luxery but it does the trick.

On the way over to Seattle, checkout the mountains.

Tomorrow I have my first ever 50K run which is located just North in Port Moody.  Honestly, I have no idea what to expect (besides being hard/long).  I haven’t been doing much for training this week.  I got to run in Prefontain’s backyard, Eugene and cycled in Portland.   My recovery this week was good; by Wednesday my legs were back to normal.  However, driving has taken a huge toll as my body refuses to be in a sitting fashion.  I’m hoping we can cooperate when it comes time to race.

I’ll try to get some videos out this week of the races/travels.  Lately all I’ve wanted to do is sleep but I’ll do my best to get some vids out to keep you entertained.

Happy Trainin!
