To the top…

February 13th, 2008 by Cliff

Tuesday I awoke to a low resting heart rate and my legs had healed from Sundays mountain hill run.  This was going to be a good day!

The day consisted of traveling to Mt.Lemon for some more mountain cycling.  On the plate was 3 x 30 minute intervals with 10 mininutes of rest between each set.  After the bike, it was straight to the car for some running; 5 x 1Km repeats.

Little hill

Motivation was high and the sun was out!  I was pretty pumped to get through this workout.  What drove most of my motivation was that I got to climb higher on Mt. Lemon.  Usually I get to around 9-10 miles.  Today I got to see the 13 mile marker!

Checkout the helmet

Starting the intervals was barred when Chris had a buldging front tire which needed to be attended too (I double as the team mechanic).  After a few minutes of resetting the tube then fixing my pump (Chris kinda made it explode!) we were both riding our bikes!

Garins Flats

I like to warm up before I hit the slopes so I did some mini loops at the base of Mt. Lemon letting Chris take the early lead.  I like to phsyc myself up for whats to come.  Just looking at the mountain staring down at you is enough to get your blood flowing.

When I do these intervals I go at them hard.  To add to my fire today was a group of tourists (some carrots if you will).  Nothing better than tearing up beside another person and just blasting past them using the big chain ring!   Sorry I am cruel.  But I’m sure if they were in my situation they would do the same!  No word of a lie, I got the "This guy must be a pro".  Sorry bud, just a kid who likes to ride his bike!

I sometimes pretend that its the Tour and Armstrong/Contador/Chicken is just up the road and I have to catch them.  It makes you feel kinda like a kid again.  Plus its a great way to forget the pain!

Steeeeep

After blowing through the intervals I got to do my longest descent ever.  My last interval put me up to 13 miles on the mountain (somewhere between 5000 and 6000 feet).  It took just under 25 minutes to get back down!

Mile 13!

Before I could call it a day there was some run intervals to do!  My speed was slow (so slow that I don’t want to publish it!).  However it was hard and thats all that matters at this point.  Speed will come!  Just have to buy some right TJ?!

Anywho, I’ve got a good adventure to talk about tomorrow (my first encounter with a person with Tourette’s!).

Lattaaaa (Happy Trainin!)
