Cost Continuation…

October 19th, 2008 by Cliff

K, so to extend on the cost of living like a pro, I’ll analyze the Ironman World Champion: Craig Alexander.  Each year since 2004 (results from his website) he has done less racing.  I’m going to look at his biggest year, 2004 and make some assumptions about costs.

First, Alexander is from Aulstralia so races around there will say he drives.  He also trains in Boulder Colorado, living their for 6 months.  So races in the states will be less than flying from his real home everytime.

So here is his results (pretty damn good!).

  • 1st Laguna Phuket Triathlon (Thailand)
  • 2nd Noosa Triathlon (Aust)
  • 1st Los Angeles International Triathlon (USA)
  • 1st US Pro Championships, Boston (USA)
  • 1st Chicago Accenture Triathlon (USA)
  • 1st Spirit of Racine Half Ironman (USA)
  • 4th Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon(USA)
  • 2nd San Diego International Triathlon (USA)
  • 4th St Anthony’s Triathlon(USA)
  • 2nd St Croix Half Ironman(USA)
  • 2nd Accenture Series Round 2, St.Kilda (Aust)
  • 3rd Accenture Series Round 3, Geelong (Aust)
  • Bronze Australian Sprint Championships (Aust)
  • 3rd Accenture Series Round 5, Sydney (Aust)
  • 3rd Accenture Series Overall 2003/2004(Aust)
  • Gold Australian Long Course Championships(Aust)
  • Silver Australian Olympic Distance Championships, Mooloolaba (Aust)

17 total.

Entry Fees: Let’s say that he pays them all.  So 17 races with a min value of 100 and max of 250.  I’d say the average would be 150, so in total $2550.

Flights: 8 of the races are in Aulstralia.  8 are in the States and the other in Thailand.  Let’s say 300 bones for Aulstralia, 500 for the ones around the States and 800 for Thailand.  Total 7200.

Massage: 48 weeks x $40 = $1920.  I’d say this would be a resonable  price for massage.  Maybe he gets his wife to do them, save some cash!

Food: 50 bucks for the 12 months of training.  $600.  Piddly.

Rent: Two places, say 700 (yeah right) each month.  $8400

Gear: Bike: $4500.  Wheels: $2000.  Swim Suit: $500.  So $7000.  Running stuff might be a few 100 too…

Missing anything?

Coaching!  He works with Carmicahel Training System so 600 per month.  So $7200.

Let’s add it up: $34870

Why am I doing this?  Interest I guess.  I’m just wondering really how much it costs for one of the worlds best.

The payout for any one of these races is probably clost to $5K.  He won 6 so he’s almost broke even.  It helps to be good.
