Send in the reinforcements…
Today was my 3rd week of TTing. Under heavy skies I managed to get in my ride today. The wind was at its best today. It showed me little mercy on the open road.
I began this morning with a group swim. This was the first time (since I’ve been going) that I felt slow. Not slow like "man I’m slow", slow as in "am I towing an anchor slow?". The workout was:
10m0warm up
100m triple underswitch (Total Immersion lingo
500m time trial
7 x 100m on 2:10
4 x 25m (sprints)
100m cool down
Afterwards I got to run back from the car dealership as Ricky needed an oil change.
I was very lucky today because Amanda had made me some squares (very low in sugar) to snack on. It is not easy to find low sugar items for convenient! Still sticking with the "low sugar diet". Only a week (almost) to go!
After a quick bite I did another short run to warm the legs up with a quick interval on the track. This is my only one of the week as I am giving my "run" legs a break. Finally, after returning to the house it was time for a date with discomfort.
Todays time trail was 2 x 10K with 10 minutes rest in between. I warmed up better than the previous weeks by doing some shorter intervals. Big tip for all you Tuesday Night time trialers!
Then, it was time. I put my Ipod playlist on, put the bike in gear and gritted my teeth. The first one wasn’t too bad as I had a slight tail wind to start and then a cross wind as I changed roads. I stopped the clock with a 37.1 km/h average, which in the conditions was good. Also, adding to some time was a crazy driver who almost ran me over (I’ll talk about that after).
After some light spinning it was go time again. This time I had the cross wind to start and then a direct head wind on the way back. Discomfort to the max! I tried to make myself as small as possible on my road bike. I kept telling myself that reinforcements will come soon (TT bike arriving soon!).
A couple of curses later I was done finishing with a slower speed, 35.1. Knowing that the wind was at its finest hour gave me some confidence as I pedaled home.
So crazy driver. I think every cyclist has one of these moments, where they are almost smooshed by some jerk with a white mini van passing a car and ignoring that you are coming straight at them. Yes, this idiot was passing near the end of the zone and came over the center line, not caring that I was pedaling my little legs off, probably only to gain a few minutes for work I’m sure.
Anywho, no hard was done but just a close call. I gave him the one finger salute to let him know what we cyclists think.
Thanks for reading! I’m off on a group ride tomorrow and then some yard salin’!
Have a great weekend! Happy (May 2-4!) Trainin!
